Ok, to be honest, I don’t really like Peeps. I know it’s sacrilegious, especially this time of year. Easter’s just around the corner and the grocery store shelves are bursting with these bright neon, bunnies and chicks. You can’t miss them. They are EVERYWHERE! However, after trying this Easy Easter Peeps S’mores, I’ve been converted! I can now say, “I like Peeps.”
What are Peeps?
Peeps are marshmallows, made from sugar, corn syrup, gelatin, salt and various food dyes. Peeps were first used to fill Easter baskets, although the Easter Bunny forgot to put them in my basket when I was a kid. However, more recently, marketing has increased to include other holidays like Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day. Depending on the holiday, Peeps are made into different shapes. During Easter, shapes include chicks and bunnies, in bright neon colors like yellow, pink, purple, aqua or green.
History of the Peeps
Peeps were first created by Sam Born, a Russian immigrant, who came to the United States when he was 18 years old. When Sam was 26 years old, he opened his first retail candy store in Brooklyn, New York. His claim to fame was making fresh, candy that he displayed daily in his store front window, marketing it as “Just Born,” to his customers.
In 1923, Sam started his own manufacturing company, Just Born, in New York City, along with his two brothers-in-law who helped market and sell his candies. Years later, the company acquired the Rodda Candy Company and its marshmallow chick line. It was at this time, that they began replacing the process of hand-forming the chicks with machine mass production. Just Born soon became the largest marshmallow candy manufacturer in the world. In the 1960s, stores saw a variety of new shapes depending on the season.
Fast forward to present day, Peeps can be found all year round. Lucky for us! We can make this Easy Easter Peeps S’mores for every season!
