These easy tuna tartare in wonton bowls appetizer is a crowd pleaser that is easy to pull off and sure to impress your guests.
Every time we go out to eat, we always try the tuna tartare appetizer. The flavor combinations and presentation always make it a hit. This treat can easily be made at home and has quickly become a favorite for entertaining.
When making tuna tartare at home, finding fresh ingredients is key. Since you will be eating this tuna raw, this is extra important. Most tuna is frozen, quickly after it is caught, and comes to your local store that way. So buying frozen tuna is fine. If you are buying thawed tuna at a fish store, make sure the color is bright and there are not to many white lines running through it. Those white lines will cause the tuna to be tough and stringy. Also, avoid pieces with a big bloodline (a dark red section), because that will be waste.
Making the Wonton Bowls
Wonton wraps can be found in almost every grocery store. They are usually in a refrigerated section. In my store, they can be found in the produce section.
To make the wonton bowls, spay a mini-cupcake pan with vegetable spray. Coat each side of the wrap with olive oil, and then press into the mini-cupcake pan.
Since the wraps hang over the cups, it is best to skip a hole between wraps so that they don’t get stuck together.
Bake for 6-8 minutes in the oven, but be careful, because the wraps can crisp very quickly. Depending on your oven, you may want to rotate the pan half way through if the cooking seems uneven. Immediately salt the wraps when they come out of the oven, then place on a cooling rack. These can be made ahead of time.
Easy Tuna Tartare in Wonton Bowls-Instructions
First, cut the tuna into 1/4 inch cubes. I usually cover it and place it in the refrigerator while I prepare the rest.
Next, slice the green onion very thin, use the white part and just a little bit into the green. Here you may want to adjust the amount depending on the size of your onions. Add the soy sauce, grated ginger, sesame oil, salt and pepper and mix well. Add the tuna, cover and refrigerate.
Now, dice the cucumber into pieces about half the size of the tuna. Remember to cut out the seeds and discard. The cucumber adds a nice cool crunch, but you could substitute avocado if you prefer.
Finally, combine the cucumber with the tuna and add the lime juice and zest.
Fill each wonton bowl with the tuna tartare and place on a serving tray. This should make about 24 bowls, less if you sample along the way. These easy tuna tartare in wonton bowls appetizers are sure to be a hit at your next gathering.
