The Whiskey Sour Cocktail is one of the classic cocktails. Perfectly blending whiskey with sweet and tart. It is great for both the hot summer months and the cold winter ones too!
The whiskey sour dates back to the 1860’s, but sailors had been drinking something similar years earlier. In order to prevent scurvy, the sailors added lemon juice and sugar. The first written record of the drink comes from the Bartender’s Guide: How to Mix Drinks, which was published in 1862. The next reference was from a Wisconsin newspaper that published the drink recipe in 1872. There are a few other later references too. When all taken together, we end up with the modern day Whiskey Sour which is a blend of a spirit, a sour and a sweet.
Even if you are not a whiskey fan, you may find yourself craving a well made whiskey sour. Most of the time, they are made with Bourbon or Rye whiskeys. However, Scotch Whiskey and Canadian Whiskey can be used, if that is your preference. Better yet, just try them all out and see which you like best!
To alleviate any controversy, I have not included an egg white in this recipe. If you want to include an egg white, then it technically becomes a Boston Sour. The addition of an egg white adds that frothy top you may see in some pictures. The egg white also gives it a rich, creamy texture, but I digress.
