  • Cucumber: Adds a refreshing, cool taste to the drink.

How to make the Cucumber Collins

Preparing the Ingredients

  1. Cucumber: Start by washing the cucumber thoroughly. Use a peeler and gently slice downward to create two-three ribbons. Slice cucumber into thin rounds, about 1/4 inch thick for muddling.
  2. Lemon Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice is key. Roll the lemon on the countertop to soften it before cutting it in half and juicing it. A medium lemon usually yields about 2 tablespoons of juice.
  3. Simple Syrup: To make simple syrup, combine equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved. Allow it to cool before using. Homemade simple syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a month.

Mixing the Cocktail

  1. Muddle the Cucumber: Place 4-5 cucumber slices in a cocktail shaker. Use a muddler to crush the cucumber slices gently. This releases the juices and essential oils, adding a fresh, cucumber flavor to your cocktail.
  2. Add the Spirits and Mixers: Pour 2 ounces of gin, 1/2 ounce of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and ounce of simple syrup into the shaker. Fill the shaker with ice.
  3. Shake Well: Shake the mixture vigorously for about 15-20 seconds. This chills the drink and blends the flavors beautifully.

Adding the Finishing Touches

  1. Cucumber Ribbons: Add the cucumber ribbons to the inside of the glass and fill it with ice.
  2. Strain and Pour: Strain the mixture into the prepared glass. Straining ensures a smooth drink without the muddled cucumber pieces.
  3. Top with Soda Water: Add about 2-3 ounces of soda water to the glass. Stir gently to combine, being careful not to lose the carbonation.
  4. Garnish: Finish with a lemon wheel and a mint sprig on the rim of the glass. This not only enhances the presentation but also adds a burst of fresh aroma.
