If it’s shark week or you are just hitting the waves, this Electric Shark Cocktail is a delicious mix of spiced rum, curaçao, pineapple juice and ginger beer. It’s FIN-TASTIC!
Sometimes late night TV can be inspiring and this was definitely inspired by Josh Gates (a Boston area native) and Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. Josh starts off each episode of “Josh Gates Tonight” by mixing up a cocktail, and during shark week, it was the Electric Shark.
The drink is a rum based, fruity drink, that goes down smooth. It is truly some-fin special!
Ingredients
Spiced rum, curaçao, ginger beer and pineapple juice.
I used a spiced rum, but if you don’t have that on hand, a simple white or silver rum will be equally good. The Blue Curaçao gives the blue color and a nice orange citrus flavor. It comes from the orange that grows on the island of Curacao. Pineapple juice makes this a true island drink.
As for the ginger beer, a good, high quality one is important. This is what gives the Electric Shark its BITE. You can find it in most stores in the mixer section. I used Fever Tree Ginger Beer, but Stoli and Goslings both make excellent ones as well. The Ginger Beer is non-alcoholic, so it’s even available in stores like Target.
Finally, for the garnish. Traditionally, a pineapple leaf and a cherry are used to garnish the Electric Shark. If you are anything like me, you don’t have a pineapple leaf laying around. I did have AirHeads on hand, blue raspberry to be exact. If you don’t know what AirHeads are, think taffy. Anyway, it’s quite simple to cut the AirHead into a “fin” shape and place on the glass. Not only do you get a drink, but a treat as well.
Building the Electric Shark
Use a high ball glass or hurricane glass if you happen to have one. Shockingly we had one. Fill the glass with ice. Mix in the spiced rum, blue curaçao and pineapple juice. Add a splash of ginger beer on top. Garnish with a cherry and either a pineapple leaf or a piece of blue taffy. Again, you can cut into a fin shape out of the taffy (preferred method by Knife & Paddle).

Hope your drink is FIN-TASTIC! Cheers.
