It’s a full moon outside so beware of werewolves! Transform your sugar cookies into these cute Halloween Werewolf Paws. The kids will love them!
Halloween and Christmas are my two favorite holidays. And with both of them quickly approaching, we have been creating a lot of great new recipes. Transform your favorite sugar cookies into these Halloween Werewolf Paws. They are scary-adorable and the kids will love them!
Tools to help you make the best Halloween Werewolf Paws
- Use a good mixer: if you like to bake, invest in a good mixer like the Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer. However, a good hand mixer can be used as well.
- Invest in a Nice Pastry Board: JK Adams Ultimate Pastry Board that features 5 engraved diameter markings for the most common crust sizes and has a vertical and horizontal ruler for easy pastry measurements. In addition, it has a cleated bottom that braces against the edge of the counter to hold the board in place. It’s a great board that makes rolling out dough for crust, cookies and pastries much easier!
- Good Rolling Pin: The JK Adams Rolling Pin allows for smooth and even rolling. It’s durable and washable.
- Cookie Cutters: It’s great to have a variety of round cookie cutters in all shapes and sizes!
- Invest in good, baking sheets: Using the right baking sheets make a huge difference when baking cookies.
- Wire racks: if you haven’t invested in a wire rack or two, you should. Placing your baked goods on wire racks help with both cooling and eliminating carryover baking.
- Thin spatula: a thin spatula will help you to remove your cookies from the baking sheet with ease. It will also help eliminate cookie distortion when removing!
- Decorating Tip/Pastry Bags: In order to create a “hairy” look, you’ll need the Wilton Grass Decorating Tip 233 and some pastry bags.
What’s in Halloween Werewolf Paws?
- Sugar Cookies: I use my Homemade Sugar Cookie Recipe for the base of these cookies. However, you can use store bought sugar cookies or bake your own with packaged sugar cookie dough.
- Chocolate Buttercream Frosting: Make the following buttercream frosting (it’s delicious!) or you can use a store bought one. Your choice!
- Cashews: Use whole cashews for the werewolf claws.

Homemade Sugar Cookies
- Using a stand mixer with a paddle attachment or a hand mixer, beat butter and vegetable shortening.
- Add sugar and beat until light and fluffy.
- Drop in eggs and pure vanilla extract and beat until combined.
- Add flour, baking powder and salt and beat until a dough forms.
- Gather dough into a disk, cover with wax paper and refrigerate for 2 hours.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Once dough is chilled, roll dough out about 1/4 inch, on a floured surface. Use a circular cookie cutter (about 3 1/4 inches) and cut out dough. Place directly on a light colored baking sheet. If cookies are sticking, line with parchment paper.
- Bake cookies for about 8-10 minutes or until edges are just starting to turn brown. (For softer cookies bake 8-10 minutes, for crunchier cookies bake 10-12 minutes).
- Move cookies to a wire rack and cool completely.
Homemade Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
- In a small sauce pan, melt Baker’s chocolate over low heat.
- Using a hand mixer, beat butter until creamy. Add melted chocolate and beat until combined.
- Add powdered sugar, milk and pure vanilla extract and beat until smooth and creamy.
- Prepare a pastry bag with the Wilton Grass Decorating Tip 233 and fill with frosting. Twist the top of the pastry bag so that the frosting doesn’t seep out when the pastry bag is squeezed.
- Hold the tip vertically over the cookies and squeeze the pastry bag. Pull up on the tip quickly. This doesn’t need to be perfect, to create the “hair” effect. Repeat and cover the whole cookie.
- Press 5 whole cashews into the cookies for the claws.
- Serve and enjoy!
How to store Halloween Werewolf Paws
My kids gobble these cookies up in less than 24 hours! However, if you have any left, store cookies in an airtight container, in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. Remove and let sit for about 10 minutes before eating. Since the frosting contains a small amount of milk, you can also store at room temperature covered for 2-3 days.
Can I freeze these Halloween Werewolf Paws?
Yes! You can freeze these sugar cookies without the frosting for up to 3 months. Take out cookies, bring to room temperature, frost, and top with whole cashews for the claws. Serve and enjoy!
