History of the Martini
The classic martini is made with gin and vermouth and garnished with olives or lemon. While there is some debate as to its origin, most historians agree that it can be linked back to Martinez California. The claim is, it was invented sometime during the mid 1800’s, during the height of the gold rush. As the story goes, a miner who had struck gold went to a local bar and asked for a drink that the bartender did not have the ingredients for. The bartender proceeded to make a drink with what he had on hand, gin, vermouth & bitters. The rest is history! Additionally, the traditional conical shaped glass is reported to have been first used during the prohibition era. The shape of the glass, allowed patrons of the speak easies an easy way to dump out their glass in the event of a police raid.
Luckily for us, we don’t have to worry about police raids when drinking. While the classic martini is delicious, the drink has evolved over the years. Modern martinis combine fruit juices or purees, vodka or white rum and garnished with fresh fruit. Mixologists around the world have put spins on the classic martini which seem to be a lot more tasty and easier to go down!
Tropical Mango Martini-Instructions
In a shaker filled with ice, add the mango vodka (regular vodka is ok), mango puree, pineapple juice and simple sugar. Shake well and pour into a chilled martini glass. If you would like it a little sweeter, line the rim of the glass with sugar. Mango puree can be found at bigger liquor stores or you can order it here. Also, if you have access to fresh mangos you can blend your own.
The Tropical Mango Martini is a refreshing spin on the classic. Give it a try as you won’t be disappointed. If you like martinis try our Blueberry Storm Martini, Banana Coconut Martini, Cape Cod Martini, Strawberry Watermelon Martini, Poisoned Apple Cider Martini or Cinnamon Toast Crunch Martini.
