Mint Julep

History

If you are a horse racing enthusiast or just in the mood for a classic cocktail, you can’t go wrong with the Mint Julep. The Mint Julep has a long history in the United States. It was originally created in 1784 in Virginia, as a medicine, made with rum, brandy or whiskey. Eventually, it became a popular drink. However, the whiskey version became the standard as only the “rich” could afford the imported rum and brandy.

The drink traveled west to Kentucky, and in 1938, the Mint Julep became the official drink of the Kentucky Derby.

Over 120,000 mint juleps are served at the Kentucky Derby each year. This feat requires 10,000 bottles of Bourbon, 60,000 pounds of ice and 1000 pounds of fresh mint. For a small price of $1000, you can get one made from Woodford Reserve Bourbon, ice from the Swiss Alps, mint from Australia while served in a gold plated cup. What a bargain!

Why a pewter cup?

While traditionally served in a chilled pewter cup, the intent of the pewter cup is debated. However, if held properly, from the top or bottom, a nice frost forms on the cup. Interesting fact I thought you should know! As you can see, we use a classic low ball glass.

Classic Mint Julep-Ingredients

Bourbon, the star ingredient, is American whiskey aged in new oak barrels. 95% of Bourbon comes from Kentucky. However, as long as it is made in America, it can be labeled Bourbon.

Other ingredients are mint, simple syrup and crushed ice. You can make simple syrup by combining water and sugar in a 1:1 ratio. Just boil until the sugar dissolves, and let cool. Even easier, pick up a bottle at the grocery store located with the drink mixers.

Classic Mint Julep-Instructions

Combine simple syrup and mint, in a glass of your choice. Gently muddle the mint. If you do not have a muddler, the handle of a wooden spoon will do. If you over work the mint it will become bitter, so take care.

Next, add the crushed ice. Pour in the bourbon (of your choice) over the ice and stir.

Garnish with a few sprigs of mint and a straw if you have one. Cheers!
