It is first believed that rum originated on the island of Barbados. However, the first rum creations were low in quality and were often characterized as a hot and terrible liquor. A few short years after its creation in roughly 1650, rum’s popularity spread to Colonial America. In 1664, the first rum distillery was set up on Staten Island. Three years later, Boston, Massachusetts open its first distillery and rum became Colonial New England’s largest and most financially successful industry. The rum produced in the colonies became so popular that it was considered the best in the world throughout the 18th century. Unfortunately, after the American Revolution, the popularity of rum began to decline. This was largely due to the restrictions on rum from the British islands of the Caribbean and the birth of American whiskey.
