With only 5-ingredients, this Frozen Blueberry Daiquiri will quench your thirst on those hot summer days! A refreshing and delicious drink!
This past week down at the Cape we made this Frozen Blueberry Daiquiri, a variation of The Classic Daiquiri. What I love about this drink is that it can be enjoyed any time of the year. However, in the summer months, this drink is a must. It’s super delicious and blueberries are one of the healthiest fruits around! Blueberries are great for your skin, heart and provide your body with needed vitamins and minerals. And after a long day at the beach it will quench your thirst!
The History of the Daiquiri
It is believed that the daiquiri was invented by an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox. As the story goes, he first mixed up this cocktail consisting of rum, lime juice and sugar at a bar in Santiago, Cuba around 1900. Just shy of a decade later, the drink first hit the United States around 1909. Admiral Lucius Johnson, a naval medical officer first introduced it at the Army and Navy Club in Washington DC.
The Classic Daiquiri is traditionally shaken and then strained into a chilled cocktail glass. However, several spins on the classic has been introduced. In addition to the classic ingredients of rum, lime juice and sugar, many present day daiquiris include blended fruits like strawberries, raspberries and bananas. A frozen daiquiri may be enjoyed with the addition of ice cubes or frozen fruit along with the classic ingredients and then blended until smooth.
Whether you enjoy the classic or the frozen, either daiquiri can be enjoyed all throughout the summer and anytime of the year! Cheers!
Fresh or Frozen Blueberries?
Some believe that if you use fresh blueberries, you’ll need ice, and that dilutes the drink. Others believe that if you use all frozen, it will be too thick, and you’ll need to eat it with a spoon. In my opinion, I like the thick, frozen consistency. I used frozen blueberries and added a little ice. It was delicious! On those hot summer days, it’s going to start to melt anyway, unless you drink it quickly. And if you’re like me, then it’s going down fast! Experiment with both, frozen and fresh, and see what combination you like best.
What type of Rum should I use?
Daiquiris are typically made with white rum, which is clear. I use Bacardi Rum, that is a mid-level, widely available brand. In addition, you can use Havana Club, Cruz, Appleton, Mount Gay. However, since this drink is blended with fruit, any mid-level brand will work perfectly well.
Frozen Blueberry Daiquiri-Ingredients
- Blueberries: use fresh or frozen blueberries. If you use all fresh, the consistency may be more like a smoothie. If you use frozen, you’ll get more of a slushy consistency. (That’s the way I like it).
- Rum: If you want to stick with the classics you will go with a light rum. Don’t use spiced rum or dark rum as it will change the taste of the drink, and not for the better!
- Lime Juice: This is the heart of the daiquiri. Fresh limes and freshly squeezed lime juice is key in this recipe. If you are making several drinks, squeeze and strain the lime juice beforehand and place in a squeeze bottle for easy access.
- Simple Sugar: Do not use granulated sugar because it will be grainy when mixed with cold ingredients. Instead, buy a bottle of simple sugar or make your own simple sugar. The name says it all!
- 2 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen)
- 4 oz light rum (Bacardi)
- 2 oz simple sugar
- 2 oz lime juice (fresh squeezed)
- 1 cup ice
Instructions
- Combine blueberries, rum, simple sugar, lime juice and ice.
