The Classic Daiquiri

The Classic Daiquiri is back! With only three ingredients, rum, lime juice and simple sugar, just one taste and you may never go back to a frozen one!

The Classic Daiquiri

What goes around comes around! The Classic Daiquiri is back in full swing! This simple but delicious cocktail is shaken and served straight up. It’s sweet and sour, smokey and sexy! With just one sip it will show you why it’s made a comeback!

Who Invented the Daiquiri?

It is believed that the daiquiri was invented by Jennings Cox, an American engineer, who lived and worked in Cuba after the Spanish-American war. As the story goes, while hosting a party, he invented the daiquiri after he ran out of gin. On the fly, he substituted rum in the punch he was serving. Thus, the daiquiri was born!

6 Basic Cocktails

There are 6 Basic Cocktails, according to David A. Embury, who was a well-known mixologist and the author of The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks (1948), an encyclopedia of the 20th century cocktail. The Daiquiri, the Jack Rose, the Manhattan, the Martini, the Old Fashioned, and the Sidecar.

The Classic Daiquiri-Ingredients

  • Rum: If you want to stick with the classics you will go with a light rum. Don’t use spiced rum or dark rum as it will change the taste of the drink, and not for the better!
  • Lime Juice: This is the heart of the daiquiri! Fresh limes and freshly squeezed lime juice is key in this classic recipe. If you are making several drinks, squeeze and strain the lime juice before hand and place in a squeeze bottle for easy access.
  • Simple Sugar: Do not use granulated sugar because it will stay grainy when mixed with cold ingredients. Instead, buy a bottle of simple sugar or make your own simple sugar. The name says it all!

What Glass Do You Use for a Daiquiri?

The Classic Daiquiri is sweet, sour, smokey and sexy! So it’s usually served in a chilled martini glass or coupe glass, like the one I used here. This coupe glass pictured was a little on the bigger side, so I adjusted the recipe accordingly.

The Classic Daiquiri-Instructions

  1. Fill a glass with ice. Set aside to chill.
  2. Add 2 cups of ice to a cocktail shaker.
  3. Add light rum, fresh squeezed lime juice and simple sugar.
  4. Shake cocktail shaker sideways for about 20 seconds.
  5. Strain into glass.
  6. Garnish with a lime twist.
  7. Cheers!

How to make a lime twist

  • Wash and dry a lime.
  • Cut a 1/4 inch round.
  • Make one cut from the center to the outer edge.
