The Irish Maid Cocktail is a smooth, sweet and sour cocktail with notes of cucumber and floral accents that make it pleasant and easy to go down!
With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, Jim decided he wanted to post the recipe for this Irish Maid Cocktail. Not particularly being a whiskey fan, when he told me the ingredients, I turned my nose up at the idea. However, after mixing this one up, I am excited to share this one with you today.
The Irish Maid Cocktail is a smooth, sweet and sour whiskey cocktail made with cucumber and lemon. Trust me, I was thinking the same thing, but honestly you’ve got to try it. I am pretty sure that once you taste this cocktail it will soon become a regular tradition on St. Patrick’s Day or really anytime you’d like to indulge in a refreshing whiskey cocktail!
Where did the Irish Maid come from?
Although there are a few stories out there, I am going with this one…
The Irish Maid Cocktail was a spin off from the Kentucky Maid. As the story goes, the Kentucky Maid was created by popular New York bartender Sam Ross. This drink combines bourbon, lime juice, simple syrup, mint and cucumber to create one refreshing, thirst quenching drink! After its debut, other spin offs featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients combined with a variety of spirits were born. For a London Maid, simply swap out the bourbon for gin and as mentioned, for the Irish Maid, use Irish whiskey.
What does an Irish Maid Cocktail taste like?
The Irish Maid Cocktail is smooth, sweet, sour and refreshing. It has notes of cucumber and floral accents from the addition of elderflower liqueur. You may be asking yourself what is elderflower liqueur? Elderflower liqueur is made from the small, white, blossoms of the elderflower bush. These flowers are handpicked and the liqueur is made with no preservatives or additives. So use it within 6 months of opening for best flavor. You may be thinking, why would I want flowers in my drink? Don’t worry it doesn’t taste like cheap perfume, but rather, it adds hints of floral undertones providing a nice sweet flavor to your cocktails.
In addition, it’s a great starter cocktail for non-whiskey drinkers because it has a nice balance of flavors that mellows out that strong, whiskey taste. This cocktail is really easy on the palate and goes down way too easily so beware…and enjoy!
