Perfect for warm summer evenings or any time you crave a citrusy libation, this recipe is sure to become a favorite. Let’s dive in and explore the ingredients and step-by-step instructions for crafting this delectable beverage.

Key Ingredients for this Refreshing Grapefruit Margarita

The key to a delicious grapefruit margarita lies in the freshness of the ingredients. Using ripe grapefruits will ensure vibrant flavors, while fresh lime juice and high-quality tequila will enhance the overall taste. Simple syrup, provides the perfect balance of sweetness, but you can adjust the amount according to your personal preference or omit it all together.

What kind of tequila should I use?

There are three types of tequilas that are traditionally used in a margarita: blanco (aka silver), minimally or un-aged tequila or reposado and añejo, high-proof tequilas that are aged in oak for a period of two to twelve months, yielding more complex flavors.

According to Liquor.com the best tequila for margaritas is Roca Patrón Silver that will run you about $40. However, if you are looking for a budget friendly option they suggest Espolòn Blanco that is about $17. For the following margarita we used Milagro Silver Tequila that is about $32.

Experiment with your favorite tequila and let us know what one you like best!

Triple Sec vs. Cointreau: what one should I use in a margarita?

Triple sec is an alcoholic beverage that originated in France in the early 1800s. It’s a clear, dry, orange liqueur made from orange peels, that tastes very citrusy, and sweet with a pronounced orange flavor. Its name triple sec stands for triple distilled, meaning that is has undergone the distilling process three times.

Cointreau on the other hand has a more complex flavor, consisting of both sweet and bitter orange peels. In addition, it also has undertones of honey and spice. However, the two are often used interchangeably. The reason being is because they both have the same orange base. However, with one sip, you’ll realize that there is a pretty big difference in taste.

Bottom line is that if you want to have a bolder, sweeter taste then use Triple sec. And if you like it a little more balance of bitter and sweet then use Cointreau. In addition, Cointreau has a higher alcohol content too. Try both in the following recipe and see what one you like best. We used the Cointreau for this one!

How to choose the perfect grapefruit

Grapefruit comes in a three varieties: red, pink or white. Its distinguishing feature is its sweet, bitter, and tart taste that ranges from mild to intense. One of the great things about grapefruit is its wide availability and can be purchased at your local grocery stores year round.

Regardless of variety, when selecting the best grapefruits start by selecting ripe grapefruits. They should be firm but yield slightly to pressure when gently squeezed. Pick the heaviest ones as they tend to be the juiciest. Lastly, look for grapefruits without the green color on the skin and ones without soft spots, as they will likely taste the best.

Cut the grapefruits in half and juice them, either by using a citrus juicer or simply squeezing them by hand. Aim to extract approximately 3 ounces of fresh grapefruit juice for two servings. Set the juice aside.
