Should I use melting wafers or chocolate chips?
I found that the best and easiest way to make these pretzel bites is to use the Dolci Frutta melting wafers. All you have to do is heat the container in the microwave at 30 second intervals, stir and repeat until the chocolate is smooth. In my grocery store, this product is often found near the fruit section, as this is the product I used in my Quick Chocolate Covered Strawberries. If you cannot find this product at your grocery store, you can find it online at Amazon or Walmart. Lastly, any type of melting wafers work perfectly fine. In addition, you can also use chocolate chips but you may need to add some vegetable shortening to thin out the chocolate.
Salted Caramel Pretzel Bites-Ingredients
- 96 pretzel snaps
- 24 caramels (11 oz bag, Kraft, cut in half lengthwise)
- 1 package Dolci Frutta melting wafers (8 oz package)
- holiday nonpareils (to sprinkle on the top)
- coarse salt (if desired, to sprinkle on the top)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 250°F.
- Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Unwrap caramels. Cut caramels in half lengthwise.
- Lay out 48 pretzel snaps onto the parchment paper. Place one caramel half onto each pretzel snap.
- Place baking sheet into the oven for 8 minutes until the caramels are soft. Remove from oven.
- Place another pretzel snap on top of each softened caramel, gently pressing down, making sandwiches.
- Microwave Dolci Frutta melting wafers according to package directions. If chocolate is thick, add 1-2 tsp of vegetable shortening to thin it out.
- Dip each pretzel sandwich into the chocolate leaving about a corner uncovered.
- Place chocolate covered pretzel bites back down onto the parchment paper.
- Sprinkle on holiday nonpareils and add coarse salt if desired for an enhanced salty & sweet treat.
- Allow pretzel bites to set. To speed up the process, place them in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
- Arrange in a bowl, tin or on cookie platters.
- Serve and enjoy!
Pro Tips
Experiment with Toppings: Get creative by adding crushed nuts, drizzled chocolate, or mini-holiday M&M’s for a unique twist. Try adding on nonpareils or sprinkles that fit the holiday or occasion. There are endless possibilities!
Use white chocolate or dark chocolate: Try using different types of chocolate to customize your pretzel bites. In addition, experiment with different color combinations by using different colored melting wafers.
Add vegetable shortening: If your chocolate is too thick, just add 1-2 tsp of vegetable shortening to thin out the chocolate.
