It’s almost time to celebrate Cinco de Mayo! So if you’re looking for a spicy and sweet cocktail to enjoy with friends, look no further than the Fireball Margarita. This twist on a classic margarita combines the flavors of tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur with the cinnamon kick of cinnamon whiskey. However, if you can’t wait until May 5th to try this margarita, then spice up your taco Tuesday and mix one up this week! It’s hot, sexy and will go down easy!

What kind of tequila should I use?

There are three types of tequilas that are traditionally used in a margarita: blanco (aka silver), minimally or un-aged tequila or reposado and añejo, high-proof tequilas that are aged in oak for a period of two to twelve months, yielding more complex flavors.

According to Liquor.com the best tequila for margaritas is Roca Patrón Silver that will run you about $40. However, if you are looking for a budget friendly option they suggest Espolòn Blanco that is about $17. For the following margarita we used Milagro Silver Tequila that is about $32.

Popular cinnamon whiskeys

Cinnamon whiskey has quickly become a well-known and popular spirit. Over the last 20 years, cinnamon whiskey has become a go to in mixed drinks, a staple in warm cocktails and delicious hot shot that many college students enjoy on nights out at the local bars. Personally, I enjoy any drink made with cinnamon whiskey because I love the flavor that can be easily described as similar to red hots or hot tamales. Just try our popular Cinnamon Toast Crunch Martini, Fireball Apple Slushies or Fireball Eggnog and let us know what you think! Regardless of what you think about cinnamon whiskey, I can tell you it’s here to stay and new creations are being made all the time, like this Fireball Margarita. Here are some of the most popular cinnamon whiskey brands that we recommend you try in this Fireball Margarita.

  • Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey: Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey is probably one of the most well-known cinnamon whiskeys on the market. Making its debut in 1984, it quickly skyrocketed to the top. Partially by fact that you pretty much can venture a guess as to what it tastes like just from its name. Hot, sweet, and spicy!
  • Jim Beam Kentucky Fire Whiskey: If you have ever gone to Kentucky (I was there for graduate school) then you know that Jim Beam is a must try! Jim Beam Kentucky Fire Whiskey is fiery, sweet, and smokey with notes of cinnamon, bourbon and vanilla making this whiskey a definite must try!
  • Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire: Only making its debut on the market in 2014, many eagerly anticipated its release. This young version of cinnamon whiskey combines the legendary No. 7 with a spicy, fiery cinnamon liqueur. In addition, there are notes of vanilla that round out this delicious whiskey.

How to make the best Fireball Margarita

It’s important to use fresh/high quality ingredients for the best flavor.

  • Tequila is the star of the margarita, so it’s important to choose the right one. Tequila provides a distinct flavor to your drink. Choose a tequila that you enjoy drinking on its own, as this will greatly affect the flavor of your margarita. We used Milagro Silver Tequila for this one!
  • Cinnamon whiskey: Adding cinnamon whiskey provides a unique twist on the traditional margarita. Use Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey, Jim Beam Kentucky Fire, or Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire. Choose your favorite!
  • Orange liqueur, like Cointreau or Triple Sec adds sweetness and depth of flavor.
  • Squeeze your own lime juice! Fresh lime juice gives the margarita a bright, citrusy taste.
  • Simple syrup is a sweet clear liquid that is often added to cocktails for sweetness as well as it balances out the tartness of the lime juice. It’s simple to make!
  • Salt or sugar?  Rub a lime wedge around the rim of the glass. Add coarse salt or sugar to the rim. Personally I like the sugar for this one! Plus you can find sparkling sugars that come in all colors!
  • Crushed Ice (optional): I added a little crushed ice to my prepared glass to ensure a very cold drink.

Equipment needed

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Margarita glass

Using a cocktail shaker is key to creating a well-mixed and chilled margarita. A cocktail strainer helps to remove any pulp or ice from the mixture, leaving behind a smooth drink. A margarita glass is the perfect vessel to show off the drink’s vibrant color and allows for rimming the glass with salt or sugar.
