Healthy and Delicious Guacamole

Guacamole is loved by many for its creamy texture, zesty flavor, and versatility. Whether you’re using it as a dip for chips or veggies, as a topping for tacos or salads, or as a spread on toast, guacamole is a delicious and healthy addition to pretty much anything. While traditional guacamole is made with just a few simple ingredients, there are many variations that can take it to the next level. We will show you how to make our favorite guacamole and some of the best healthy and delicious guacamole variations to try.

All about guacamole

Before we dive into the different variations, it’s important to understand the basics of guacamole. There are several ingredients in guacamole with the main ingredient being avocado. Avocados are packed with nutrients like fiber, healthy fats, and vitamins. In addition to avocados, guacamole also contains a lot of different veggies like tomatoes, red onion, cilantro, and jalapeños. All in their own right packed with nutrients, making guacamole one healthy and delicious dish!

How to select the best avocados

There’s noting worse than cutting into an avocado that is a brown, mushy mess inside! The best way to tell if the avocado is ripe is to check the area underneath the little stem. If the stem is easy to remove and there is a nice green color underneath, then you’ve probably picked a good one! On the other hand, if you find it hard, crusty and brown underneath the stem, most likely this is what it looks like inside. In addition, look for ones that are slightly firm to the touch.

Cutting the avocados

Lay the avocado on a stable cutting board. Cut lengthwise into the avocado stopping at the pit. Turn the avocado onto its side and continue cutting it while slowly spinning it. The knife should remain in contact with the pit and follow along the cut line until fully sliced. Grab each half of the avocado and give a light twist, the two halves should easily break apart. Next, place the half with the pit on the cutting board, strike the knife into the pit, twist the knife and the pit should pop out. You may need to do this twice to get the knife to stick, be careful to make sure no fingers are in the way when striking the pit! At this point I use a larger spoon to scoop out the flesh.

Great guacamole dippers

There are so many great things to dip into guacamole. Try some of these great dippers!

  • Tortilla Chips: My personal favorite! Tortilla chips and guacamole go perfectly together! Plus they come in all shapes and sizes! Original, scoops, and bite sized are all perfect dippers.
  • Firehook, Sea Salt Mediterranean Crackers: I love these crackers! You can usually find them at most grocery stores like Market Basket, Shaw’s, Stop and Shop and Whole Foods. You can also buy them on Amazon. These crackers are all natural and baked from scratch. They make great dippers because they are firm, crunchy and have a great taste.
  • Veggies like peppers, tomatoes, carrots, cucumber, celery. Any hard vegetable makes a great dipper!
  • Toast: Toast your favorite bread, cut it into strips and dip! You can also add a fried egg to the toast and top it with some guacamole. Guacamole and egg are a healthy and nutritious breakfast!
  • Pita bread or pita chips: Guacamole and pita make another great combination.

Different variations of guacamole

Spicy Guacamole

If want to spice up your guacamole, add some heat! For our recipe we did use some jalapeño but if you want more heat then you can also add habaneros or other hot peppers. In addition, you can always add a little hot sauce, pepper flakes or a pinch or two of cayenne pepper. Try our Carolina Reaper Hot Sauce or Mango Hot Pepper Sauce and add a few drops to the guacamole. It is sure to bring that extra heat!

Fruit-infused guacamole

Fruit-infused guacamole has become very popular in recent years. Adding fruit like pineapple or mango is a tasty way to add some sweetness, texture and a tropical flavor to your guacamole. Pick your favorite fruit, dice it up and add it to your guacamole. The possibilities are endless.

Veggie-packed guacamole

Adding veggies to your guacamole is a great way to boost nutrients and add additional flavor and texture. A popular veggie is black beans. It adds additional creaminess and also a nice contrasting color. In addition, try roasting your veggies before adding them to your guacamole. Roasting veggies, like tomatoes add a rich, smoky flavor to your guacamole.
