This Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri Shake combines fresh strawberries, rum, sugar, lime juice and vanilla ice cream. A boozy adult shake. Yum!
I first made this Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri Shake while in college. My housemates and I were sitting on our deck, overlooking the Long Island Sound, and we were in need of a beverage. So I decided to experiment with my blender and make this strawberry daiquiri. One of my favorite drinks! I threw in some rum, strawberries, ice, sugar, lime juice and blended it together. I wanted it thicker, so I threw in some vanilla ice cream to create this delicious boozy shake. It was thick, creamy and refreshing. The perfect beverage to drink while enjoying some sun, lounging by the beach.
What is a Daiquiri?
A daiquiri is one of the six classic drinks, that has been around for years and never disappoints. It’s a mixture of rum, sugar and citrus juice, most typically lime juice. These ingredients combined make a great, refreshing beverage that can be enjoyed anywhere, anytime!
The History of the Daiquiri
It is believed that the daiquiri was invented by an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox. As the story goes, he first mixed up this cocktail consisting of rum, lime juice and sugar at a bar in Santiago, Cuba around 1900. Just shy of a decade later, the drink first hit the United States around 1909. Admiral Lucius Johnson, a naval medical officer first introduced it at the Army and Navy Club in Washington DC.
The Classic Daiquiri is traditionally shaken and then strained into a chilled cocktail glass. However, this version has evolved and serval spins on the original has been introduced. In addition to the classic ingredients of rum, lime juice and sugar, many present day daiquiris include blended fruits like strawberries, raspberries and bananas. A frozen daiquiri may be enjoyed with the addition of ice cubes or frozen fruit along with the classic ingredients and then blended until smooth.
Whether you enjoy the classic or the frozen, either daiquiri can be enjoyed all throughout the summer and anytime of the year! Cheers!
Frozen or Fresh Strawberries?
Here’s the deal with the strawberries. If you use fresh, you’ll need ice, and some say the ice dilutes the drink. If you use all frozen, it may be too thick, and you might need to eat it with a spoon. Use half fresh, half frozen and you’ll get the perfect consistency! Experiment with what you like best. For this recipe, I used fresh strawberries because that’s what I had on hand, and added some ice. The ice cream makes it nice and thick so for this one, use what you have.
What type of Rum should I use?
Daiquiris are typically made with white rum, which is clear. I use Bacardi Rum, that is a mid-level, widely available brand. In addition, you can use Havana Club, Cruz, Appleton, Mount Gay. However, since this drink is blended with fruit, any mid-level brand will work perfectly well.
