With St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner we have really been indulging in the Irish cocktails. Last week we posted the Irish Maid Cocktail that is one delicious whiskey-elderflower combination. It is so good, even non-whiskey drinkers will love it. However, today were are posting the classic Mudslide Cocktail. A sweet ending to that traditional boiled Irish dinner. A sweet, creamy, rich milkshake-like cocktail that is sure to please!

The history of the Mudslide Cocktail

Depending on who you believe, there seems to be two versions of where the Mudslide Cocktail originated. The first version believes that the Mudslide Cocktail was invented in the 1950s at the Wreck Bar in the Grand Cayman Island. As the story goes, a customer requested a White Russian. However, the bartender, named Old Judd, did not have any heavy cream so he substituted Irish cream liqueur instead, creating the first version of the Mudslide.

However, the second version believes that the cocktail originated in the 1970s by Bailey’s to help market its Irish cream. Bailey’s Irish cream was introduced in 1974 after 2 years in development. So if one of the main ingredients of the drink was not introduced until the ’70’s, I kinda of lean to the second version being more accurate. Whatever story you prefer, we’ve been enjoying this great cocktail for over 50 years!

What does a Mudslide taste like?

If you like milkshakes, then you’ll love the mudslide! A mudslide is creamy, smooth, rich and depending on how much chocolate you add, it pretty much tastes like a chocolate milkshake. If you like it really chocolatey then add some chocolate syrup before you shake it up. Personally, I love the recipe as is but experiment and see what way you like it best.

Different versions of the Mudslide Cocktail

Shaken, stirred and poured

To make the mudslide we have brought to you today, combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well, until very cold. Stain into a prepared coup or martini glass. This version is a great after dinner dessert cocktail.

On the rocks

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add all the ingredients and shake well. Strain into a lowball or cocktail glass filled with ice. This version is a nice after dinner sipping drink.

Frozen

Add all the ingredients to a blender. Add one cup of ice and one scoop of vanilla or chocolate ice cream. Blend until smooth. Pour into a prepared high ball, hurricane or tall cocktail glass. Add whipped cream, chocolate syrup and/or a cherry to the top to create one eye catching dessert cocktail. This version is perfect for those hot summer nights!

Best ways to prepare your glass

Add a chocolate swirl to the glass

If you want to add a chocolate swirl/drizzle to your glass, this is by far the easiest and best way! Use hard shell chocolate syrup. Place your glass into the refrigerator or freezer for a few minutes. Drizzle on the hard shell chocolate. It should stick well to the chilled glass.

Rim the glass

Dip the rim of the glass into simple syrup or chocolate syrup. Then dip into crushed chocolate, chocolate sprinkles, cocoa powder or graham cracker crumbs.

Garnish

Add whipped cream and top with chocolate syrup, chocolate shavings, chocolate sprinkles, cocoa powder, etc. Add a maraschino cherry if desired.
