This decadent pie is a true winner! This Simple Kentucky Derby Pie is a delicious combination of pecan pie meets chocolate chip pie. In addition, it has become the traditional dessert to eat during the derby!
Have you ever been to Kentucky? I lived in Lexington for two years while obtaining my Master’s Degree from the University of Kentucky and it’s so beautiful there. Sprawling horse farms, white picket fences, and Kentucky Blue Grass that goes on for miles! The grass is so green it looks blue!
Kentucky has many rich traditions. However, nothing says Kentucky more than the famous Kentucky Derby! It takes place every year at Churchill Downs in Louisville just a short ride from Lexington. It’s considered the most legendary of all thoroughbred horse races and is held the first Saturday in May. Americans all over the country partake, in one way or another, in the traditions of the derby. Some of these traditions include women wear the most interesting and beautiful hats, drinking mint juleps, decking out in your finest threads, and one of my personal favorites, eating Kentucky Derby Pie!
History of the Kentucky Derby Pie
In 1950, the Melrose Inn in Prospect, Kentucky, made this pie as a speciality pastry. Walter and Leaudra Kern, who eventually trademarked the name “Derby Pie” created this recipe for their restaurant. Although their recipe has been kept secret, this Simple Kentucky Derby Pie is rich, decadent, and most importantly easy to whip up. Just add all the ingredients to the bowl, mix and spread into your prepared pie crust. Done! Given the response from many willing participants, this pie crossed the finishing line first!
The Derby is just around the corner! Are you ready to try this winning pie? Then let’s get started…

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a small sauce pan, melt butter. Let cool.
Using a stand mixer with a paddle attachment or a hand mixer, add eggs, sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, butter (cooled) and beat until combined. (Make sure the butter is cooled or it can curdle the eggs!)
Add flour, salt and pecans. Beat until combined.
Stir in chocolate chips.
Who knew there are all-in one pie shells? These make this recipe even EASIER! Love these!
Pour into an unbaked 9-inch pie shell.
Bake for 45-50 minutes. If the pie is browning too quickly place a piece of tin foil over the top of the pie. Remove and let cool.
Serve at room temperature.
If desired add a scoop of your favorite ice cream! Enjoy!
