Before we get into how to make this delicious drink, it’s good to know how to pick out the very best watermelon. No one wants to get home and then find out that you picked a bad one, stuck with a huge flavorless, juiceless and all around terrible watermelon! Hopefully the next time you are at the store these tips will help you pick out a good one.
Tips on How to Pick Out the BEST Watermelon
Tip 1: Find the Field Spot
What the heck is a field spot ? I didn’t really know either until I learned about them. That is where the watermelon rests on the ground. The side that looks ugly and dirty. Yup, that’s it. The field spot should be a creamy, yellow color. The darker yellow color, the more ripe the watermelon as it indicates that it was on the vine longer. Contrary to that, if the field spot is white or missing then the watermelon is underripe. Don’t buy that one!
Tip 2: Knock on the Watermelon with Your Knuckles
Give the watermelon a knock with your knuckles, if they bounce off the surface then it is ripe. In addition, the surface should be hard and firm. If the watermelon is starting to spoil, then you’ll get a dull thud while knocking. In addition, the surface may feel soft or a little soggy.
Tip 3: Get a Heavy One!
The reason you want a heavy one for its size is because it usually means that there is more water in it, making the watermelon nice, sweet and juicy!
Tip 4: Get a Dull Looking Watermelon
The shiny ones may look more appealing but actually they indicate a less ripe watermelon. Dull in this case is better!
Tip 5: Look for and Pollination Points
You’ve definitely seen these on watermelons! They are dots in a line that is seen on the surface of the watermelon. They are not scratches (although they look like it) but rater they are pollination points and the more of them the better. More pollination points equals a sweeter watermelon.
