The Story of the Grinch

With Christmas just around the corner, you’l soon be seeing reruns of the movie, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” The Grinch, a fictional character created by children’s author and cartoonist Dr. Seuss, has been around since 1957. This funny looking green, furry, Pot-bellied creature lives in seclusion with his dog Max on a cliff overlooking the town of Whoville. The grinch, is known throughout the town to be mean-tempered, nasty and vindictive. In particular, he hates Christmas.

The Whos in contrast, are cheerful, thankful, and truly love everything about the Christmas season. Often found engaging in holiday cheer and singing and celebrating with their family and friends.

On Christmas Eve, the Grinch decides to disguise himself as Santa and breaks into the town of Whoville, stealing everything they own, destroying Christmas once and for all. However, on Christmas morning he is shocked to hear the Whos singing cheerfully and truly enjoying being with one another, despite Christmas being destroyed. It is here that he realizes the deeper meaning of Christmas. Inspired from the true magical meaning of the Christmas season, he brings back Christmas to Whoville and is invited to take part in the Whos’ Christmas Day Celebration. While the Grinch enjoys the Christmas celebration with the Whos, the Grinch’s heart, that was once considered “two sizes too small” grows “three sizes.” Wake up to this delicious Grinch Mimosa and enjoy one for breakfast Christmas Day!

What ingredients are in the Grinch Mimosa?

To embark on this delightful journey, let’s first explore the vibrant palette of ingredients that brings the Grinch Mimosa to life. Start with the basics: quality champagne, orange juice, and a hint of Blue Curacao. The champagne adds effervescence, the orange juice provides a citrusy kick, and the Blue Curacao will turn your mimosa a bright green, reminiscent of the Grinch himself. What’s fantastic about this recipe is its flexibility – feel free to adjust the ratios based on your taste preferences.

What Champagne should I use?

While you can use any Champagne for the Grinch Mimosa Recipe, I prefer demi-sec champagnes that tend to be on the sweeter side.

According to gayot.com the best demi-sec Champagnes are:

  • Champagne A. Margaine Cuvée, from Villers-Marmery, France, runs about $45 for 750 ml
  • Billecart-Salmon’s Demi-Sec, from Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, France, runs about $55 for 750ml
  • Champagne Collet, from Aÿ, France runs about  $53 for 750ml

However, there is no need to break the bank and use Champagnes from France. There are many budget-friendly alternatives. For example:

  • Italian Prosecco (that I used for this recipe) that runs about $13-20 for 750ml
  • Spanish Cava which runs about $15-25 for 750 ml
  • Gruet Demi-Sec, from America that runs about $17 for 750 ml

Glassware and Garnishes

Choosing the right glassware is essential to enhance the drinking experience. Opt for tall, elegant champagne flutes to showcase the bright green beauty of the Grinch Mimosa. Elevate the visual appeal with optional garnishes like sugared rims, fresh cranberries, maraschino cherries or a lime wedge. You can find specialty glassware at local kitchen stores, and experimenting with creative garnishes adds that extra touch of magic to your presentation.
